CLD Corner: Being Your Own Hype-Person

Even after nearly a decade and a half of teaching, training, and leading, I still get nervous on new encounters. Crazy right? The fact is this: It happens to the best of us.

Folks, I am going to share something with you that I normally do not share. Even after nearly a decade and a half of teaching, training, and leading, I still get nervous on new encounters. Crazy right?

The fact is this: It happens to the best of us.

How do we get past it? The best trick I have ever learned is to Be Your Own Hype-Person

This revolves around having positive self- talk and finding the strengths in the way you deliver. It seems simple, but when fear comes our way, we begin to protect ourselves and find any negative out there. Positive self-talk allows you to be assertive with the person who needs it the most in those tough situations: You.

How do I create positive self-talk?

If being your own Hype-Person is new to you, think about the excellent attributes that make you strong, such as: I am an engaging person. I know my content inside and out. People look to me for advice and I always come through. I am a great listener and a quick learner. I am extremely passionate about what I do, and it carries to other people I am worthwhile because I breathe and feel; I am self-aware The trick is that it must apply to you. This requires you to find at least five positive attributes about yourself that you can go to, even in the toughest moments.

Give Yourself the "SPARK" You Need

To start focusing on being a better Hype-Person, use the acronym SPARK to create meaningful ideas about yourself. SPARK stands for. Speak - In the present tense; who are you now that makes you incredible? Prompt - New ideas. Seek the things about yourself that no one knows makes you great. Act - As if give yourself permission to be powerful; now is NOT the time to be humble. Remain - Positively personal; self-talk must relate to you and you only Keep - Sentences short, simple, and defined; no fluff needed.

For example: You are powerful because you prepare amazingly, you are an incredibly engaging person, and you know how to speak life into what you do.

Now it’s your turn! Time to be your own Hype-Person and see how you feel afterward! Power comes through positive talk!
